On the evening of the 18th February 2016….
On arrival, I asked a member of RSPB staff if the Penduline Tit’s which had been recorded at this site for the past week were showing. “Yes she said, I saw them myself ten minutes ago“. Filled with excitement, I made my way to the watchpoint hide. Everyone in the hide had a big smile on their face and there was plenty of room, as I quickly located the days prize. Two Penduline Tit’s, showing very well from the hide. Great views, great life tick and I was very happy.
The rest of the reserve was fairly busy today with many enjoying the sunny weather. During my walk, I noted a couple of Stonechats and it was nice to see a small group of Pochards. No sign for me of any Long-eared Owls or Bittern today, however the walk was relaxing. Good numbers of wildfowl were on the freshwater.
On my drive home, I stopped off at Jackson’s Landing, Hartelpool, where I year ticked the visiting Glaucous Gull. The bird was sitting on the water, infront of the Premier Inn.
Finally after driving through the Tyne Tunnel, I stopped off at Tynemouth Haven, where i quickly year-ticked the long staying Black Redstart.
So three good birds, Penduline Tit, Glaucous Gull and Black Redstart. A great selection.
